The
"Foundation For A Miracle" was established in 2005. The
purpose of the Foundation is to assist Rochester, NY area families who
have a family member with Friedreich's Ataxia and to contribute
to research that will one day cure Friedreich's Ataxia.

What
is Friedreich's Ataxia
Friedreich's
ataxia is a neurodegenerative disease affecting about one in 50,000
people. People who are afflicted with Friedreich's Ataxia have degeneration
of the long nerves of the spinal cord, the cerebellum and the nerves
carrying sensation to the hands and feet. The disease is steadily
progressive and death may occur in early adulthood. While there
is no known treatment or cure for Friedreich's ataxia, worldwide
research is ongoing, and it was only five years ago that researchers
identified the gene that is linked to the disease. Continued research
will hopefully identify ways to minimize the effects of this hereditary
disease. Fundraisers such as this event will continue to channel
money directly to the researchers working so diligently to solve
this disease and to the families who have been impacted by this
disease.

The
Foundation's primary fundraiser is the annual golf tournament.
This year the 5th annual tournament will be held on Friday,
June 12th, 2009 at Shadow
Lake Country Club. With this being a 'family friendly'
event, we are having the tournament this year on their 9-hole
Executive Golf Course. This year's tournament will be more conducive
to beginners, yet will still be challenging to golfers of all
levels. There will be games at various holes for the golfers,
with an opportunity to take strokes off of golf scores for the
winners of those games. Just some added fun to the tournament!
